Glossary
These are the terms we use across the app and in this manual.
- Annotation Card - A card created from an image with labeled regions.
- Archive - A Benkyo Box export format that packages cards and media for backup or sharing.
- Card - A question and answer pair you study.
- Completed - Cards or folders that no longer need to be studied for the day.
- Deadline - A target date set on a folder for an upcoming test or important event. Studies increase in frequency as the deadline approaches. Only available with Advanced Learner subscription.
- Final Interval - The last interval in the progression. When you score a card as "Easy" at the final interval, it's considered finished and won't appear in future study sessions.
- Finished - Cards that have been fully learned. They won't appear in future study sessions anymore.
- Folder - A container used to organize cards related to a specific topic. Folders can be studied independently.
- Hidden Folders - Folders that are excluded from study sessions and today's summary. Only available with Advanced Learner subscription.
- Incomplete Study - A session you exited before finishing; remaining cards stay due for later.
- Interval - The time between reviews.
- Library - The main view where all folders are organized and where you can see a summary of your study progress for the day.
- Quick Entry - A fast way to create cards by pasting alternating question/answer lines.
- Ready to Study - Cards that are available to study right now.
- Rest Interval - The time a card cannot be studied after you've completed a study session. This helps cards stay in long-term memory.
- Score - Your assessment of how well you recalled a card. Scores range from "Easy" (recalled quickly and accurately) to "Don't Know" (can't recall it).
- Spaced Repetition - A learning technique that optimizes review timing. Cards you know well appear less frequently, while cards you struggle with appear more often, ensuring better long-term memory retention.
- Study Session - A focused run of due cards with reveal and scoring until the set is complete.
- Study Status - The current state of a card, which can be Ready to Study, Upcoming, or Finished.
- Today Section - The Library section that summarizes what's due now, upcoming, and completed.
- Unavailable - A card that cannot be studied at the moment, either because it's Upcoming or Finished.
- Unsorted - Cards not yet placed in a folder.
- Upcoming - Cards that are scheduled to be studied later (not available right now).
