Glossary

These are the terms we use across the app and in this manual.

• Advanced Learner - A subscription that unlocks additional features, including card extraction, deadlines, hidden folders, audio transcription, arrows, and emoji pins.
• Annotation Card - A card created from an image with labeled regions.
• Archive - A Benkyo Box export format that packages cards and media for backup or sharing.
• Answer - The information you want to recall when you see a card's question.
• Audio Transcript - Text created from an audio recording. Transcripts can make audio cards readable in study views, search, print, and PDF export.
• Calendar - A view that shows when cards are scheduled for future study.
• Card - A question and answer pair you study.
• Card List - A list of cards inside a folder, Recents, Today, or Unsorted.
• Completed - Cards or folders that no longer need to be studied for the day.
• CSV - A spreadsheet-style text file that can be imported to create many cards at once.
• Deadline - A target date set on a folder for an upcoming test or important event. Studies increase in frequency as the deadline approaches. Only available with Advanced Learner subscription.
• Final Interval - The last interval in the progression. When you score a card as "Easy" at the final interval, it's considered finished and won't appear in future study sessions.
• Finished - Cards that have been fully learned. They won't appear in future study sessions anymore.
• Folder - A container used to organize cards related to a specific topic. Folders can be studied independently.
• Hidden Folders - Folders that are excluded from study sessions and today's summary. Only available with Advanced Learner subscription.
• Incomplete Study - A session you exited before finishing; remaining cards stay due for later.
• Incomplete Study Reminders - Notifications that remind you to finish studying newly created cards.
• Interval - The time between reviews.
• Library - The main view where all folders are organized and where you can see a summary of your study progress for the day.
• Mind Palace - A memory technique where you imagine a familiar place and attach information to locations inside it. Visual cards, annotations, arrows and emoji pins can help you build those location-based associations.
• Question - The prompt that asks you to recall a card's answer.
• Quick Entry - A fast way to create cards by pasting alternating question/answer lines.
• Ready to Study - Cards that are available to study right now.
• Rest Interval - The time a card cannot be studied after you've completed a study session. This helps cards stay in long-term memory.
• Score - Your assessment of how well you recalled a card. Scores range from "Easy" (recalled quickly and accurately) to "Don't Know" (can't recall it).
• Second Brain - A larger reference library for storing information you may want to look up later.
• Shortcut Action - A Benkyo Box step you can use in Apple's Shortcuts app to automate tasks.
• Spaced Repetition - A learning technique that optimizes review timing. Cards you know well appear less frequently, while cards you struggle with appear more often, ensuring better long-term memory retention.
• Standard Card - A stand-alone card with a question and answer. Each side can use text, images, audio recordings, equations, or drawings.
• Study Hours - The time range when Benkyo Box sends study notifications.
• Study Session - A focused run of due cards with reveal and scoring until the set is complete.
• Study Status - The current state of a card, which can be Ready to Study, Upcoming, or Finished.
• Surface Lexicon - Words or concepts you can quickly recall and use without looking them up.
• Today Section - The Library section that summarizes what's due now, upcoming, and completed.
• Today Progress Bar - The progress bar in the Today Section that shows how many cards have been studied and when more cards become available.
• Unavailable - A card that cannot be studied at the moment, either because it's Upcoming or Finished.
• Unsorted - Cards not yet placed in a folder.
• Upcoming - Cards that are scheduled to be studied later (not available right now).
• Zine - A small foldable booklet made from one printed page. Benkyo Box can print 4 cards in this format.
